There are some simple steps to painting this watercolour chicken. Here are 3 stages of the process;

  1. Start by using a light watercolour wash and blocking out of all background colours. Include the base colour of the chicken which in this case was light gray. Allow to dry. Always approach the piece you are working on as a whole.
  2. Start defining the details of feathers, head, beak and the darker shaded areas in your second layer.
  3. Allow the white of the paper to do the work for you. In this case the feathers of the chicken are mainly white – if not cream in some places. Then use a smaller brush to work on the finite details and negative dark spaces including the detail of the chicken’s head.
